Goodsell Super 17 Head & Super 17 MkIII 1x12 Combo
|
| The Super 17 MkIII has been our best-seller for over two years. It is the latest evolution of the original Goodsell 17, which at the time was being made on leftover Hammond organ chassis and iron. It features a pair of EL84s, a solid-state rectifier, and 3 very busy 12AX7s - one of which is the long-tail phase inverter while the other two take care of pre-amp, reverb send & return, and tremolo oscillator. Speaking of tremolo, all Goodsells so equipped use the same bias-vary design that garnered the Guitar One Award for Excellence & Design when it was introduced in the 33 Custom four years ago. The all have a speed and depth control and can be operated with the included foot switch. On the 17, the single gain stage (comprised only of 1/2 of a 12AX7) is controlled by the GAIN knob and the single TONE control, which together with a transparent post-phase inverter volume (we don't call it "master" here) offers a lot more flexibility that it would appear. The tone ranges from a bright-ish, harmonically complex chime, to a soft, approachably polite overdrive. An extremely versatile amp that loves single coils, especially Telecasters. |

Goodsell Custom 33 Head & 1x12 or 2x12 Combo
|
| The 33 takes the simple theme of the 17 and doubles the power. With the exact same front-end as the Super 17, the 33 features 4x EL84s in a basic 3-knob head or combos with reverb and tremolo (now optional on the head as well). All 33s feature cathode biasing, tube rectifiers, 8/16 ohm output switch, and 17/33 half-power switch. Heads are black, combos are black, blue, green, or brown. |

Goodsell Black Dog 20 & 50 Head & Combo
|
| The Black Dog series features a more complex two-stage gain structure and full 3-way tone stack, which may be by-passed by foot switch for an additional 20dB of gain. The Black Dog 20 is powered by a pair of E84L/7189s, While the Black Dog 50 has a pair of EL34s. Cathode-biasing once again means hassle-free ownership while imparting a unique sonic signature for amps in this class. The voicing is early '70s medium-high gain, with the ability to roll back into stellar clarity using only the knobs on your guitar. The Black Dog 20 is also available as a 1x12 combo with standard reverb. All Black Dogs are solid-state rectified. |

Goodsell Unibox 10
|
| The Unibox 10 debuted at last Summer's NAMM show, but has had virtually no press since - I haven't been able to spare a review unit. The first Unibox was completed exactly 3 days after I inadvertantly had the occasion to play a friend's Unibox U-45B. I found the schematics on-line and saw tons of room for easy improvement - I kept the unusual 6BM8/ECL82 tubes that have a triode and power pentode each in the same bottle, but I was able to adapt a long-tail PI using the triode sections of the two power tubes. I replaced the rudimentary tremolo with my own, and added reverb, which, along with the pre-amp only required two 12AX7s. To conserve filament current and keep the power supply size and weight down, I chose the obscure but still NOS-available 6X5GT. Cheap, plentiful, and soft. With a light and cheap ceramic speaker, it totally captures the vibe of the Unibox, only somehow louder and better. |

Goodsell Dominatrix 18
On the heels of the surprising popularity of the vintage Univox-inspired Unibox 10, comes a new Goodsell model - the Dominatrix 18. Packaged in the same venerable 5E3 cabinet as the Unibox and 17 MkIII, the Dominatrix takes it's inspiration from the Watkins Dominator series made in England in the '60s and '70s. At first glance, the Dominatrix appears to be structurally similar to the MkIII: 2 EL84s and a trio of 12AX7 dual triodes - but then there's an EZ81 tube rectifier where there was a solid-state one on the MkIII. Further scrutiny reveals that the six knobs serve different functions; gone is the tremolo replaced by a tone stack that notably includes a mid-range control. Volume, master volume, and the now-familiar Goodsell reverb round out the knob complement.
Behind the faceplate dwells a 2-stage pre-amp, a significant departure from the 17's single-stage configuration. This pre-amp is followed by a phase inverter that is physically similar to the one in all the other Goodsell amps, but with completely different component values, mostly taken from the Watkins recipe. Like all other Goodsells, the Dominatrix is cathode-biased, however the bias resistors and grid resistors differ significantly.
The result is a new amp that has all of the physical attributes of the MkIII (light weight, compact size) with improvements on the original design (hand-wired, reverb, mid-range, master volume, rectifier) that is different enough from it's predecessors to warrant it's own model designation.
The sound is browner than the 17, and there is quite a bit more gain on tap, perhaps not as much as a Black Dog, but way more than other Goodsells. Distinctly British, but leaning more in the direction of Marshall rather than Vox - but plenty of good cleans on tap as well. The overall vibe is early British Invasion - a pint short of full-on Mersey, like Page on a Herman's Hermits session.

Goodsell Valpreaux
| The latest addition to the Goodsell family is the Valpreaux, the imagined French spelling of a contraction of "Valco" and "Supro". ("Valpro" was already being used by a Euro-pharmacuetical company). Along with a few vintage Gretsch models some of these amps used the 6973 tube, which was also found in juke boxes and certain hi-fi applications. About the same size and shape as an EL84, the 6973 is capable of up to 20% more power at plate voltages of up to 400vdc.
Architecturally, the Valpreaux is very similar to the Super17 - exact same control surface - and a single gain stage matched to a long-tail phase inverter, which was not present on any of the originals. A much-larger power tranny facilitates a 5-volt GZ34 rectifier tube, and the front-end utilizes 4 12AX7s just because it can. The Valpreaux has noticeably more girth than the 17, and the breakup, coming at the same place on the dial as the 17, is thicker, like your mama's gravy made in an iron skillet after a roast beef. This amp is as fun to distort as the 17 is to run clean - two completely different beasts of the same DNA.
